Description |
This workshop will cover the topic of how parents and/or other family members may express grief around issues related to parenting a child with developmental delays, disabilities or medical complications. With some of the discussion based on the work of Dr. Ken Moses, we will explore how parents may view the process of coming to know their child, and as all parents must, adjust to the process of parenting the child as a unique individual. We will also cover the topic of defense mechanisms, and how they may be used to manage major stressors. By understanding how defense mechanisms contribute to coping behavior, we can gain greater insight into the unique challenges which may be present when parenting a child with disabilities, and how these may have a significant impact on the parent-professional relationship.
