Preschoolers and Autism

Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now estimate the prevalence of autism in the United States at 1 in 88 children. Early onset socialization and communication impairments, as well as patterns of restricted interests and behavioral rigidities often mark this population. And while we continue to improve our diagnostic tools, children within the spectrum are too often not identified early enough to maximize the benefits of many proven intervention strategies. The evidence continues to build in favor of quality early assessment and intervention supports. They are critical to supporting these learners in the development of the pre-academic, social, emotional, and behavioral skills necessary for later success.

Participants in this course will acquire knowledge about the diagnostic process for young children who demonstrate atypical developmental patterns. Effective tools to support family members with understanding the diagnosis and treatment recommendations will be provided. Various treatment approaches will be discussed along with research based conclusions regarding efficacy of each. Common issues that arise in children’s behavior, emotional regulation, sensory processing, communication and socialization will be reviewed in depth with practical strategies to mitigate negative effects. Participants will leave this workshop with practical tools that can be immediately implemented to effectively support the youngest learners.
