Pediatric Feeding Disorders

Description

Young children can present with a variety of difficulties with feeding. Providers of services need to be familiar with these common problems and how to address them. Clinicians are likely to see children with a variety of feeding problems on their caseload. Feeding disorders occur in healthy children, those with gastrointestinal disorders, and in children with special needs. Recent research shows the growing epidemic; 25% of children are reported to have some form of a feeding disorder, with the number increasing to 80% in developmentally delayed children.

In this innovative, one-day seminar you will learn the difference between typical and atypical feeding patterns. Participants will learn to analyze feeding for sensory and motor problems resulting in atypical feeding. Participants will be introduced to common feeding problems and intervention strategies to treat them. Different considerations for nipples, cups, and straws will be discussed. A strong problem solving approach is used to help participants generalize knowledge to many different situations. Common feeding problems such as food stuffing, poor chewing, and tactile aversions will be addressed along with specific intervention strategies.
