Improving Communication and Interaction for Individuals with Autism Keynote speaker: Teaching Social: Strategies for Teaching Social and Emotional Learning Skills Joan Storey Gorsuch, B.F.A., M.Ed., Social Thinking® Mentor An overview of how social cognitive challenges impact individuals socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and in academics; and strategies, such a developing perspective taking skills, increasing awareness of emotions, understanding non-verbal cues, and expanding social awareness in different environments will be discussed. Followed by two breakout sessions – choose one: 1. Keeping our Eyes on the Prize: Using Technology to Support Communication Laura DeThorne, PhD CCC-SLP and Mariana Aparicio Betancourt, BA This discussion will provide a brief overview of what technologies are currently available to support communication and highlight suggestions for how to incorporate them in everyday activities. 2. Addressing Challenging Behavior in the Home and School Hedda Meadan, PhD, BCBA-D and Laura Bassette, PhD, BCBA-D This session will cover how to identify the function of a challenging behavior and teach strategies to address it in the home and school environments.
