Cultural Perspectives on Trauma
While culturally competent trauma treatment and practices are increasingly recognized as necessary for quality care, a gap remains in the amount and quality of data available on trauma exposure among children from diverse cultural groups.
This workshop will explore the various cultural lenses from which to evaluate psychological, family and community trauma. Several case examples that show how different cultural perspectives lead to different diagnoses and treatment goals of trauma will be discussed. Furthermore, participants will explore and define their own culture and how that affects their perspectives on trauma. Participants will be provided with literature and guidelines for assessing cultural aspects of trauma in order to be better informed when dealing with clinical issues across various cultures.
