Typical/Atypical Speech Development and Recent Studies

Description

We will discuss the typical developmental norms of speech and language development (focusing on birth to three population). Being reminded of the typical development of speech and language will help better refer and conduct therapy sessions.

We will also discuss recent research conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with Dr. Houri Vorperian and Dr. Ray Kent. Presented at ASHA 2012, the vowel acoustic space of typically developing speakers and speakers with down syndrome were analyzed and compared. Recorded productions of 40 familiar monosyllabic words were compared using acoustic analysis software. Results indicated that vowel productions are atypical in individuals with down syndrome and this could have therapeutic implications regarding reduced speech intelligibility and outcome measures in therapy.
