‘Minority is the new Majority’: Training Early Intervention Providers for the changing cultural landscape.

Description

The purpose of this curriculum is to prepare Early Intervention professionals to acknowledge and understand the role of cultural competency when working with families from diverse backgrounds. Cultural competency in healthcare is often defined as “ the ability of service providers to respond optimally to all children, understanding both the richness and the limitations of the sociocultural contexts in which children and families, as well as the service providers themselves, may be operating” (Barrera & Kramer 1997). Since culture is an inherent quality of professionals and parents alike, the challenge posed to early intervention providers is how to provide evidence-based services within the parameters of Early Intervention, while respecting the culture of the families they serve.

In this course, Early Intervention providers will learn strategies to provide intervention programs that are evidence-based and related to the principles of Early Intervention while applying knowledge in respect of the value and beliefs of the families they serve.
