Breast Feeding - Beyond the Basics

This two day course will cover, through use of power point, lecture and discussion issues surrounding breastfeeding that are frequently encountered by staff in a children’s hospital. Discussion will center on how to best support the mother/infant dyad when dealing with maternal concerns such as low milk supply or sore nipples and infants with special challenges such as clefts, Down Syndrome or tongue/lip ties. An understanding of maternal anatomy and physiology, the composition of human milk, and how birth practices can impact breastfeeding will be included. Appropriate use of alternative feeding methods, pumping and other tools will be covered. Group discussion about weaning and other concerns encounter will be part of the course.
