Considering the Impact of Risk, Trauma and Vulnerability on Young Children

Description

Child and Family Connections 10 serves many children with significant risk factors that are associated with poverty. It is critical that evaluation and assessments take into account how these factors may be impacting a child's development. Thoughtful and sensitive conversations with caregivers, including foster parents, need to focus on the child's history of trauma and other risk factors such as parental history of mental illness or developmental delay. Case presentations will be used to create conversations on determining a child's need for early intervention and types of services to offer. The IB3 program, a DCFS program focused on screening and treating infants and toddlers with trauma experiences, will be highlighted. We will focus on how to use the IB3 screening results in evaluations. Finally, we will discuss how to partner further with DCFS in supporting the child and family.
