Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disease affecting the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement. This one hour training will serve as a brief overview on the topic of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) with topics including: various forms of SMA; causes; symptoms and progression; care and treatment; and coordinating supports and services for families whose children have such complex medical and developmental needs. A case study of twins in early intervention with SMA will provide the framework for group discussion and problem solving.
