Introduction to PROMPT: Technique

Description

PROMPT (PROMPTs for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) is based on a client-centered philosophy which embodies neuro-motor principles. The system was created by Deborah Hayden in 1976 and formally organized in 1980. Since that time PROMPT been researched with both adult and child populations and has found to be efficacious in the treatment of motor-speech disorders.

PROMPT has been used successfully with: phonological, hearing impaired, dysfluent, aphasic, dysarthric, dyspraxia, autistic and head-injured. The philosophy of PROMPT stresses a way of conceptualizing, assessing and integrating all aspects of the individual towards functional communicative interactions. PROMPT may be used as treatment approach or minimally, as a technique for eliciting specific phonemes.

The PROMPT technique includes Parameters, Prompts, Complex Prompts and Surface Prompts. However, more important is the lexicon that is created to support and integrate the newly learned or reestablished, motor-speech changes. At the most basic level PROMPTs may be described as sensory-motor cues, which may be used to signal place, manner, duration, voicing and tension for phonemes, words or phrases. Co-articulation and prosody in connected speech are also enhanced.

OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this workshop participants will be able to:
1. Describe the philosophy of PROMPT and its application principles.
2. Apply different levels of prompting (Parameter, Syllable Complex, Surface) as appropriate to the selected cases.
3. Analyze speech motor sub-systems using the Systems Observation Checklist and the Motor-Speech Hierarchy.
4. Design interactive therapy activities that utilize all of the above.
