Although the SPMs were developed by occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech/language pathologists, developmental therapists, behavior analysts, teachers, and other professionals may administer the SPMs to gather information on a child’s sensory processing. The intention would then be to coordinate with an OT trained in sensory integration (SI). This workshop empowers teams to develop sensory-based strategies (through use of clinical reasoning and brainstorming) to integrate into the fabric of the child’s natural environments including home, daycare, and school (art, music, PE, recess, cafeteria, bus, and main classroom). Research behind the development of these norm referenced standardized assessment tools, SI, and sensory-based strategies will be reviewed. See more information on the SPMs at wpspublish.com/store/p/3222/spm-and-spm-p-quick-tips-qt. Characteristics of sensory processing disorder (SPD) will be discussed. You will learn how to administer and score the SPM-P (ages 2-5) and the SPM (ages 5-12) using both written and electronic methods. Case studies related to postural control, praxis, and over responsivity will be shared. Use of the electronic SPM(s) Quick Tips (a collection of intervention strategies that helps to answer the question "What next?" based on SPMs results) will be demonstrated. Other topics will include answering the question “Are sensory issues driving the behavior?” and distinguishing between sensory-based strategies and Ayres sensory integration (ASI®).
