Father involvement in home visiting programs is essential for optimal child growth and development. But in the home visiting field, which is dominated by women, there are challenges in finding a comfort level when engaging fathers of infants. Direct-service workers and supervisors alike are considering new and inventive ways to engage males in program services. Working on parenting with couples is very different than working with “just mom.”
This training explores why father involvement in home visiting programs is important, and why fathers’ or male figures’ being involved in the lives of their newborns is part of a full parenting experience necessary for a healthy outcome. Areas of focus include overcoming resistance from either or both parents, finding a professional comfort level, shaping services to include fathers, achieving shared understandings between parents and multi-generational issues. This training explores creative ways to include professional father involvement specialists as part of your service model.
