AN EAGLE’S EYE VIEW OF EARLY INFANT INTERVENTION: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

Description

Preterm birth may result in damage to developing brain
structures and immature physiological systems. To optimize
outcomes for these vulnerable infants and to support their
families, physical, occupational and speech therapists
integrate evidence based knowledge to design intervention
protocols. In this intermediate level presentation, you will
learn about the motor interventions implemented in the
NICU and/or immediately post-discharge, as well as the
impact of preterm birth on the family. The outcomes,
benefits and the application of core elements of the interventions
will be presented with recommendations for
application to clinical practice. Measurement tools identified
as appropriate for assessing motor performance in
preterm infants and the barriers for early intervention
referral and services will be discussed. Finally, you will
come away with strategies to facilitate earlier access to
early intervention services.
