Identifying Autism in Young Children and Teaching Functional Outcomes

Description

Autism Spectrum Disorder is often difficult to identify in very young children, and social deficits make therapeutic interventions challenging to implement. This training will focus on emerging, observable characteristics of ASD in relation to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria with video examples. Several behavioral teaching methods will be reviewed and participants will have an opportunity role-play these. Research literature on early pivotal skills will also be reviewed.

1. Participants will recognize characteristics of ASD in young children as shown through description and videos, increasing their ability to refer for diagnostic evaluation earlier.
2. Participants will be instructed on teaching common behavioral teaching methods (shaping, chaining, video modeling, discrete trial teaching) and practice these in role plays
3. Participants will identify early developing skills appropriate to teach to children with significant delays or challenging behaviors.
