Orofacial Myology

Description

Orofacial Myology is known under several names: myofunctional therapy, oral myology, oral myofunctional therapy, and/or tongue-thrust. This online course presents a brief historical overview of the field of orofacial myology and its relationship to the field of speech-language pathology.

Participants will learn symptoms of oral myofunctional disorders and how these disorders relate to various speech disorders. Correct resting postures of the tongue, lips, and mandible are described. The deleterious effects of mouth-breathing are presented. The implications of muscle forces upon speech production, dentition, chewing/bolus collection, and swallowing are discussed. Also covered are the procedures involved in examining various orofacial structures and functions. Offered for 0.2 ASHA CEUs – 2 contact hours.
