Cardiac ICU Interventions (McKenna)

Description

Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects 1 in 100 births and there is no “cure” for CHD. It is most often a lifelong condition. Babies and children with CHD often have multiple and prolonged hospital stays requiring highly specialized care impacting all aspects of their development. Therapists have specialized skills to identify and treat both the acute (immediate) and long-term outcomes for this population.

This course offers information on the most prevalent defects, including anatomy/physiology, surgical intervention and pharmacological considerations. This course will guide therapists into their most effective role in the cardiac intensive care unit. Participants will learn the best developmental care strategies to have the greatest impact on development. Participants will also learn considerations and interventions for feeding, positioning and handling of infants with CHD. Participants will leave this interactive and relevant course having learned the best solutions through utero, surgeries, pre-post implant, discharge and overall development of young children and with congenital heart disease and effected families.
