The Power of Listening: Using Empathy to Connect With families in EI

Description

Effective listening and positive, connected relationships are necessary in EI for the provider to support families in identifying and addressing their priorities for outcomes. We will be discussing brain science and how humans connect with one another on a meaningful, feeling level. We will consider examples of relationships which may require empathy to keep them on a positive, productive track. We will define empathy, contrast it with sympathy, and examine how disconnected relationships may result when communication is 'broken' by unintended responses or reactions. This workshop will contain numerous opportunities for discussion, solo reflective activities as well as partner and small group discussion. We will be studying the elements which contribute to effective empathy, which results in effective understanding, conflict resolution, and positive relationship building.
