Early Childhood Development: Cognitive & Play

Description

The workshop consists of a lecture and discussion regarding cognitive and play development in infants and preschool children, including play. Discussion topics include Piaget's theories of cognitive development including the processes of assimilation and accommodation. Furthermore, the lecture discusses preoperational thought, including egocentrism, abstract thought, magical thought, animism, and ritualistic behavior. A secondary focus is language development within the context of cognitive development. In regards to psychosocial development and play, lecture includes components on the importance of play, how children use play, and how play changes throughout early childhood. Discussion to include ways in which clinicians can guide parents and clinicians in forming appropriate goals for intervention.
