2018 ILOTA Conference Research Platform: Effectiveness of Sensory Integration in Improving Social Participation of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Description

While sensory integration (SI) is one of the most commonly used frames of reference utilized by occupational therapists working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Kadar, McDonald, & Lentin, 2012), there is limited evidence regarding its effectiveness in promoting social participation. In order to inform occupational therapy practice, this session will describe the current quality of evidence of SI interventions in improving social participation in young children with ASD. Implications for occupational therapists working with young children with ASD will be discussed in order to promote evidence-based and occupation-based practice.
