Pretend Play as a Learning Opportunity

This is a summarization of the Starnet Region V presentation by Jonathan Fribley on 3/12/18. The objective of this presentation is to understand pretend play development and the contribution that pretend play can make to children's learning. It supports analysis and practice of adults' roles in pretend play and discussed how to design effective prompts in play. The presentation discussed how play is a cultural universal and applicable with children of all different backgrounds. The developmental benefits of pretend play are discussed and an interdisciplinary discussion of how pretend play can be applied within the early intervention setting across therapies including speech, OT, PT, DT etc. Additionally, the effects of pretend play on executive fuctioning skills were discussed and how it affects developmental milestones across disciplines including sensory integration, language, and sequencing actions among others.
