Fetal Alcohol Syndrome & Drug Exposed Children

Description

Dr. Smith reviewed the diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and how it is given. He discussed on the varied cognitive impact of children with this diagnosis. Dr. Smith also reviewed how opiate use effects the developing child, as well as symptoms of withdrawal in newborns. Most importantly, Dr. Smith discussed how these diagnoses often coincide with other risk factors during pregnancy; including high levels of stress, additional substance abuse by the mother, and unstable living environments. Dr Smith discussed the emotional dis-regulation children may present, and the important need to be aware of how other trauma experiences may impact these children.
