Illinois Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing 60th Annual Conference: DCMP LEADS the Way

Description

LEAD your students and families to engaging videos from the Described Captioned and Media Program (DCMP). This hands-on session will begin with a review of the wonderful resources provided free of charge to account holders. Following the introductory information on the need for accurate, consistent, clear, readable and equal captioning of videos used with families and in classrooms, participants will be encouraged to sign up for an account or if they already have to one to login. From there, the fun begins! We will briefly go through the logistics of the website, the key for videos and the search options. Hands-on time with the website will follow so that attendees can preview videos they can use Monday at school or in therapy sessions. A Google Drive doc will be shared so that videos that really LEAD the way can be shared with all. Tools for making video clips, creating a lesson, printing transcripts and moving signer boxes and captioning options will also be shown and discussed. One of my favorite options is to print a transcript that our DHH students can use as notes to review instead of the traditional video note sheet that is impossible for our caption/sign viewing children to complete. We will learn how to assign videos to classes, how to set up families so that they can watch videos at home with their child for review and vocabulary development. Finally, we will consider how to best approach mainstream teachers in our programs about this reliable source of videos with high quality captioning and sometimes signing. Hopefully, all of us will leave with some accessible videos to supplement curriculum, to provide review for students and families and to eliminate the error-filled auto-generated captioning that often confuses more than helps our students.
