When adults think about anxiety, they often think about excessive overthinking and worrying, perhaps they even think of the term “intrusive thoughts”. Because our brains are designed to help us survive, all of us have experienced the feelings of anxiety at some point of time or another. I believe because we are all so familiar with feeling anxious at some point, it can be tricky to identify toddler anxiety because it can look so different than our own experience of the word.
Toddler anxiety can look like what we expect it to be: separation anxiety, phobias / fears, and excessive worry; but it can also look like rigid behaviors, laughing at “inappropriate times”, sensitivity and emotional outbursts / meltdowns. During this conversation, we will cover why toddler anxiety doesn't often look like "worry," what toddler anxiety does look like, how to conceptualize anxiety to parents, and finally some strategies to help parents with their anxious toddlers. You will walk away hopefully having a look into your own nervous system and how we can use ourselves as a tool to help parents and children alike.
