The Cutting Edge: Introducing Cued Speech to Support Literacy Instruction in a Sign Bilingual Setting

Description

In this session, participants will be introduced to a framework for understanding the essential elements of a comprehensive literacy (i.e., reading and writing) program. This framework will then be used to examine the instruction received by a group of deaf and hard of hearing students educated using a bilin-gual approach. The results of research studies that explored the efficacy of differentiating literacy in-struction using the multisensory Visual Phonics instructional tool will be shared, including the rationale for investigating a shift toward using Cued Speech. The techniques teachers utilized to introduce Cued Speech to students will also be presented and discussed.
