The P.L.A.Y. Project for Early Intervention with Autism: Introduction to the Model, Research, and Methods

Description

This seminar will provide an introduction to The Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters (P.L.A.Y.) Project early intervention model, including current research and practical methods demonstrated through video footage. The founder and medical director of The P.L.A.Y. Project, Dr. Solomon, will present an overview of this parent training model, which is based on a social-emotional, developmental framework (specifically drawing from Dr. Stanley Greenspan's DIR theory). The seminar will describe how the P.L.A.Y. Project’s home consultation model has been successfully implemented in over 25 states in a variety of settings. These settings include community mental health agencies, state-level Birth to Three programs, and non-profits such as Easter Seals. The evidence based model will be presented, including the most current information on the randomized, controlled trial of the model, which is funded by The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The seminar will also include discussions about the key methods of the model, providing practical information for implementing play-based intervention. Using video footage of parent-child interactions, Dr. Solomon will facilitate discussions about parent coaching, child functional development, and play-based approaches to engaging young children (age 0-6) on the autism spectrum.
