Using Music and Children's Literature to Facilitate Early Language Development

This seminar will allow both parents of toddlers and professionals who work with children in Early Intervention to learn about ways to expand upon their use of music and children’s literature in order to promote increases in expressive and receptive language skills. Strategies will be presented verbally and will include handouts for participants to take home. Participants will be invited to engage in hands on practice of interventions using songs, movement to music, and instruments. They will also engage in discussions about how to bring children’s books to life while assessing the child’s understanding and use of language and concepts included in a story. “Take aways” will include handouts highlighting specific book titles that may address various language targets, ways to promote early literacy experiences, how to identify musical opportunities throughout the home, and samples of home-made musical instruments and books.
