ASSESSING & TREATING CULTURALLY & LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE CHILDREN WITH COMMUNICATION DISORDERS

Description

The purpose of this seminar is to provide detailed information about assessment and treatment of communication disorders in culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Methods of increasing cultural competence, acculturation, standardized tests, and information about conducting nonbiased assessments will be discussed.

Other topics that will be outlined include bilingual support, second language acquisition, and using the services of interpreters. Participants will learn about implications for treatment of diverse clients including African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and middle easterners. Participants will also learn about selecting appropriate goals and materials for treatment. Specific strategies for developing oral and written language skills will also be outlined. The goal of this program is to provide participants with current information about assessing and treating culturally and linguistically diverse clients with communication disorders.
