Tube Feeding with Love: Building Trust during a Tube Transition

Description

While many children receive nutrition from a feeding tube at some point in their lives, in some cases it can be difficult for families to help their children learn to eat by mouth once the underlying medical conditions have resolved and a child no longer needs his or her tube. During this workshop, professionals will learn skills to help families begin to understand and apply the principles of responsive feeding as they help their child transition off of his or her feeding tube and become an oral eater. Specifically, the workshop will explore: 1. The role of trusting relationships during a child’s tube transition 2. How to know when a child is ready to undergo a tube transition 3. How a parent’s well-being is essential in helping their child transition off of a feeding tube. 4. How hunger can be used to help children learn to eat by mouth. The presentation will emphasize the importance of involving children in daily mealtime routines and provide case studies to exemplify the evidence-based practices presented.
