Service Coordinators support caregivers through many challenges. One important category is the experience of ‘loss’ and the feelings of grief that attend the loss. The types of loss range from navigating ‘the psychological loss of the idealized child,’ the need to align moment-to-moment expectations to realizable goals, the necessity to adapt and recover from adverse environmental circumstances (e.g., loss of employment, a home fire leading to displacement) and grief following the death of a family member. Recognizing the variety of ways grief is expressed and considering the range of responses we may enlist to support caregivers may qualitatively impact the life of families. This workshop will utilize a case consultation model along with self-reflection to explore strategies that might support parents who have experienced loss and assist service coordinators in self-regulation and personal stress management when dealing with these challenging issues. A small group of service coordinators (5-10) will share their experiences with families on their caseload; how they responded and experienced the process.
